STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONAL CORRELATIONS OF THE KIDNEY
The kidney is a major organ involved in the maintenance of acid-base homeostasis in most mammals including man. The proximal and distal nephron and the collecting duct possess major sites for proton and bicarbonate transport that are critical to the acid-base regulatory process. The long-term objective of our research is to identify the specific cell types and the specific transporters as well as the various subcellular organelles involved in these processes and, thereby, develop a better understanding of the mechanisms for their control.
More specifically, we are utilizing the isolated perfused tubule technique to categorize transport phenomena and immunocytochemistry with antibodies against the transport proteins and in situ hybridization with specific cDNA probes to examine the structure and function of the principal cells and the intercalated cells in the collecting duct and the S1 cells in the proximal tubule that are chiefly involved in acid-base transport.
