By swapping DNMT interacting subunits (IF3 and IF4 in this diagram), cells may be able to regulate the targeting of transcriptional repression to genes that promote or inhibit differentiation.  Additional cell-specific subunits may promote differentiation down many possible pathways.  Re-expression of pluripotent subunits in differentiated cells may enhance epigenetic reprogramming efficiency.
