The Advanced Concentration in Genetics is one of six graduate programs leadingto the Ph.D. degree under the auspices of the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Faculty from the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Medicine, Neuroscience, Pathology, Immunology & Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics, and others join forces to offer students broad opportunities for graduate training in genetics. Graduates of the program are prepared to conduct research and assume supervisory and teaching responsibilities in all facets of modern molecular genetics, including human genetics, mammalian genetics, lower eukaryotic genetics, bacterial genetics, viral genetics, and immunogenetics.
During the first year students initiate studies in the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Sciences. Upon completing a year of formal course work, common to all graduate programs, which is augmented by participation in seminars and research rotations, students enter the Genetics Advanced Concentration. On entering the genetics program, the student selects a mentor and a supervisory committee which is chaired by the student's mentor. All IDP Ph.D. candidates must pass a qualifying examination that test proficiency in genetics and related areas as well as the ability to formulate and defend a research proposal. Dissertation research is conducted with the advice of the student's supervisory committee. The program of study leading to the Ph.D. degree can be completed in four to five years.
Suggested Courses for First-Year Students: Students interested in pursuing Genetics as an advanced concentration area of study are encouraged to obtain a broad perspective of basic biomedical sciences during the first year. Students who are interested in establishing a stronger foundation in molecular biology may consider taking BCH 6415, Advanced Molecular and Cell Biology (3 credits) during the Spring semester. Students who are interested in establishing a strong foundation in statistics may consider taking STA 6166, Statistical Methods in Research I (3 credits). Additional courses courses to fulfill the requirement for 6 credits of coursework during the Spring semester may be chosen from the core course and advanced module listing on the Spring Semester Advanced Courses web page, depending on your particular interests.
Suggested Courses for Advanced Students: Most Genetics students are expected to take about four of the six minimum required credits of advanced coursework within the Genetics concentration offerings, but the final selection is determined by the student and approved by the student's supervisory committee. Advanced graduate courses that are organized by the Genetics advanced concentration and may be taken to fulfill the minimum advanced course requirement of at least 6 credits beyond the first year are listed at the following two web pages:
Fall Semester Advanced Courses Spring Semester Advanced Courses
Journal Club: The Genetics journal club meets each Wednesday at 4:00 pm in room R2-265 during the Fall and Spring semester. All Genetics students are required to register for the Genetics journal club (GMS 6920: Genetics Journal Colloquy) each Fall and Spring semester beginning in their second year. Genetics students may participate in other journal clubs in addition to Genetics journal club if they wish to.
