Restrictions to Allowed Animal Research During Rotations |
|
Obtaining approval for any departures or deviations from standard operating procedures, rules or regulations, and ensuring that the rotation student completes any additional required training, will be the responsibility of the Principal Investigator supervising the individual rotation, and subject to the conditions set forth in their IACUC-approved protocol.
IDP students should not participate in the following kinds of animal research during rotations without IACUC approval:
a. Category 3 studies (What are the Categories?);
b. non-standard housing, care, or treatment (including but not limited to: solitary rather than standard group housing, rodent caging with wire-mesh bottoms, metabolic cages, non-standard diet, bedding, light cycle, temperature, or method of sacrifice not approved by the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia);
c. animal housing anywhere outside of ACS facility housing for >12 consecutive hours;
d. multiple survival surgeries;
e. protected species, exotic species or wildlife;
f. privately owned animals;
g. dogs exempt from the required exercise and enrichment program;
h. monkeys in a protocol that requires exemption or modification of the existing enrichment program or that prevents group housing;
i. animals subjected to "excessive, unusual, or prolonged" restraint;
j. use of paralyzing agents (vecuronium, gallamine, pancuronium, atracurium, etc.) without accompanying general anesthesia to restrain animals;
k. use of Freund's Complete Adjuvant;
l. animals undergoing any food or water restrictions in excess of 24 hours; and
m. animals experiencing any electric shock.
All IDP students are required to complete radiation safety, laboratory safety, biological safety, and blood-borne pathogen training by EH&S prior to beginning their lab rotations. Participation in rotation research involving the use of radioisotopes, hazardous chemicals, human or animal pathogens, recombinant DNA, transgenic or knockout animals, and/or toxins must be included in the individual Principal Investigator's IACUC-approved protocol(s) to which the rotation students are added by addendum. Obtaining approval for such research from the appropriate Environmental Health & Safety units is the responsibility of the individual Principal Investigators.
