2002 Health Care Summer Institute!

June 23 - July 20, 2002

Shands at the University of Florida

This NIH-funded program is designed to increase the number of ethnic minority students entering research and academic careers. The Office of Minority Affairs (OMA) and the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) co-sponsor summer camps for minority high school students with career interests in the health professions. Participants shadow several health care professionals and attend workshops in study skills and test taking. Preference is given to undergraduates; however, the program is also open to professional students.

Students are compensated with a stipend, housing and travel allowance, reside in University Housing and are supervised by health profession students who serve as the camp counselors and mentors.

Each year, the University of Florida Geriatric Education Center hosts a session with the Summer Institute attendees to watch the UF-GEC's award-winning video, "The Nursing Home Visit," and to play the UF-GEC developed game, "Gerontopoly" as an introduction to geriatrics.
