Feedback from BOR positive
Linda Butson:
Library is feeling impact on closing of Library West and may affect the Blue room.
Dr. Davidson:
We have not done a good job of implementing Institute of Medicine's policies
Criticized for ignoring by AAMC quality and patient safety in health centers
Medical errors, patient safety--leads to medicine and public health
Core curriculum: epidemiology; biostatistics; environmental health; health service admin; social and behavioral sciences.
Institute of Medicine Report by Livingood (add his slides) here.
Dr. Hatch Ð Gave a Subcommittee on Public Health and Prevention. Click on hatch041304.html for his interim report to the Curriculum Committee. He stated that the Subcommittee met at least 3 times.
Dr. Watson: 4th option is to change the focus of community health and family medicine on some of the above issues in the family medicine clerkship. The Duval County Health Department could be a model for public health.
Bill Allen: How much should be elective and how much should we require of everyone?
Dr. Romrell stated that these fit nicely into the first year courses.
Dr. Rarey
Do we know what the concepts are that they are not getting?
Dr. Hatch:
We do not have a section on it on the website
Tends to be subsets of this
OPTIONS
Dr. Davidson
Students need to be exposed to some of this before the 4th year
Dr. Hatch
Need more didactic type sessions
More general recognition and emphasis on subject and practical experiences in the field
Dr. Rarey
Are there website programs or online programs to complement what you are doing?
Dr. Hatch
We will have a COM site that tracks the curriculum
Dr. Vidauretta
Sounds like we are doing a great job in the 1 and 2 yrs
Need to focus on 3rd and 4th year
3rd year is likely in place
Dr. Harrell
Do a competency-based portfolio, which is a much bigger issue?
Bill Allen
If Community Health and Family Medicine were the lead on this how would it change?
Dr. Hatch
Will have difficulty having students see value.
Bill Allen
Recruit students who are looking for this and make it a distinctive thing.
Dr. Davidson:
We do not have enough geriatrics in the curriculum;
Public health is in the same sphere
Please give feedback to Dr. Hatch and he will take it back to his committee and lay out a timeline to make recommendations by April.
Dr. Rarey will present at the March meeting.
Dr. Davidson was to ask Sasha to do presentation with Heather of his online portfolio.
Meeting adjourned 8:50 am.
