SGEA Meeting was held in Charleston, South Carolina and we were well represented.
Dr. Berns announced that FSU is still involved in their initial accreditation process, which is not yet complete. The Committee thanked Dr. Berns for his contribution as a member of the Curriculum Committee, pending his resigning and taking his new post in New York.
Dr. Hatch gave a brief report on the Interdisciplinary Generalist Clerkship, which currently includes two weeks of outpatient internal medicine, two weeks of geriatrics, two weeks of neurology, and six weeks of family medicine. The course has been well rated with the exception of the one week of geriatrics and to a lesser degree the rehab part of that. We are still using the four day clinical training with the Friday didactic session which has been a successful educational design.
Dr. Meuleman gave a report on the characteristics of the geriatric portion of the course.
Dr. Euliano was present and reiterated her desire to get anesthesia back into the third year and raised the issue of possibly integrating it into an interdisciplinary clerkship.
Dr. Hatch offered the compromise of integrating some of the content of anesthesia into the existing structure of IGC.
Dr. Watson pointed out that the Curriculum Committee needs to step back and take a good look at the third and fourth year together before getting distracted with rearranging its current content.
Summary: No decisions were made about changing any of the course structure
in the third year at this time.
