Faculty Development Program

by Caridad Hernandez, M.D.

Residents as Educators Program

The program is new, and initial efforts have been based on the successful Jacksonville program. A few faculty asked about the incentive for residents to buy into this program. Indication was that by giving residents food, attendance increased somewhat. Some faculty addressed concerns about scheduling and maybe including it at orientation where residents are not as committed. Since there is a lot of activity at orientation, it will be difficult to piggyback this educational effort into orientation, but consideration is being given to breaking the residents into groups spread out over their 2 1/2 day of orientation. It was also suggested by Dr. Kaunitz that maybe some reward like the golden apple would be an incentive for residents to attend this additional training. Dr. Watson suggested that in order to get them to buy into this additional training that maybe they should be evaluated on their competencies. If the program directors are aware that you are providing them with additional training to help their residents meet some of the competencies maybe this will be an incentive. It is clear that the program is off to a good start.

Interdisciplinary Family Health Course

by Richard A. Davidson, M.D., M.P.H.

IFH is an interprofessional course that includes over 400 students from 5 different UF colleges. The course teaches issues relating to preventive medicine, collaborative practice, and socio-behavioral aspects of health care using home visits as a learning mode. Evaluations from last year were very positive regarding the team aspects of the course. The course and UF are being site-visited April 21-22 by the Interdisciplinary Education Committee of the AAMC. The site visit will include representatives of the American College of Nursing, the American College of Pharmacy, and others.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 a.m.
