IOM report - who will keep the public healthy?
Over 40 UF faculty members are contracted to Jacksonville Institute for Health, Policy and Evaluation. Dr. Watson stated that we need to think about public health prevention and end of life care. This has to be a health systems problem and solution. There is a shortage of physicians, and too few are working too hard and being asked to do something without being reimbursed. At a medical student level, how much should a medical student learn about public health?
Livingood: Some decline about the community and physicians. The cost of a medical education has gone out of control. Maybe more public service opportunities might help. There is an erosion of public perception.
Dr. Davidson responds by asking: Should this be part of the general medical education? Dr. Burchfield remarks about how much publikc health is in the Keeping Families Healthy Program? Dr. Davidson stated that he will assign a subcommittee to improve the content in public health. Bill Allen states that maybe a survey like we did on bioterrorism could be accomplished. We would put new content in other coures, without overlapping, emphasize ways for people to get involved. A survey would see how we could "fit" into the curriculum that already exists.
The Curriculum Committee gave the task for coordinating our competencies in the undergraduate with the graduate medical edication system of competencies. We developed ways to give feedback to students. If we do not have a policy on grade inflation, then we need to address this issue.
At the February retreat, there were areas that we weren't sure were adequately addressed. We want to look at some of those areas and see what faculty are doing so we don't overlap. Dr. Harris' report is official policy guidelines for grades, keeping in mind that grades and competencies are different. Bill Allen inquired as to whether we should realign the policy to conform to our current standards.
Meeting adjourned.
