Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes - September 27th, 2005
Present: Watson, Davidson, Rarey, Bhavin Adhyara, Wayne Bottom, Omayra Marrero, Suki Subbiah, Rathe, Ritz, Normann, Chen, Romrell, Sumners, Beth Layton, Linda Butson, Harrell, Meuleman, Averbuch, Novak, Hatch
Dr. Davidson announced that there were two new members of the committee, Dr. Maureen Novak and Dr. Louis Ritz. He also announced Margie McGarva’s retirement from the UF College of Medicine and introduced the new recording secretary Melissa Liverman.
Student announcements: Ms. Suki Subbiah stated that the fourth-year students are busy applying for residency applications and announced that Tom Brokaw will be their graduation speaker in May 2006. Ms. Omayra Marrero reported that the first-year students enjoyed orientation. Mr. Bhavin Adhyara said the class enjoyed making the first-year students packets for orientation and announced that the Fungus Ball will be held March 4th, 2006.
Ms. Linda Butson handed out packets from the Library Access Program, which is a workshop given to first year medical students. Special thanks was given to Tim Flynn for a monetary donation to support the Up-to-Date program, which will be available solely for campus-use with limited licenses for up to five users at one time.
Dr. Watson announced that the senior students were selected for AOA, as well as two faculty members, Drs. Normann and Sumners. He also reported that the students were selected for the Chapman Humanism Society. He announced Beth Layton as the library spokesperson and noted that the library will be supporting two new rooms, the History Reading Room and the Smiley Hill Celebration Room. This will help greatly to provide more space for award ceremonies, etc.
Comments: Dr. Watson stated that the Curriculum Committee is empowered to design and have a coordinated curriculum and is empowered to make all decisions.
Dr. Rarey presented initial findings from a study which is investigating Educational Policy Committees (or Curriculum Committees) at a number of institutions, assessing the needs of the members. When the data are more complete, he will present the final results.
Dr. Rarey outlined the roles of the Committee regarding the LCME standards.
Dr. Watson commented that we need continuous evaluation of programs and students. He expressed that the end-of-year summary from the Office of Program Evaluation and Faculty development is incredibly helpful.
