Sarah reported that the 4th years are enjoying life and starting the interviewing process. Arnold reported that the 2nd years just finished general path. Suki stated that the 3rd years just got grades back and were a little surprised but are moving forward.
Dr. Genuardi was impressed with 3rd year class as far as preparation goes and says they are doing well. Dr. Romrell relays the staff is off for homecoming for the entire day this year, including Jacksonville. However, the students and faculty are not off and staff must have their offices covered. Those staff that work will be able to take a day off at a later time. Dr. Watson reports that there will be 135 students next year.Colin Sumners - COM Honors Research Track Update
Dr. Sumners gave an update on the progress of Medical Sciences Research Program.
Dr. Geuardi asled how this program has affected the admissions process. Dr. Summers said the MD/Phd program is gone now and this program seems to appeal to incoming students.
There will be students who will want to take some of the courses but not commit to the track. Dr. Romrell replied that the dean says all students have that option.Debra Newell and John Meuleman – Geriatric Curriculum

The geriatric curriculum was passed by the Curriculum Committee in 2000, but never implemented. We need to make some decisions about the geriatric curriculum at this institution.

Guideline Competency Areas that May Not be Adequately Covered at UF:
- unique aspects of depression (diagnosis, treatment) in the elderly
- pain management: chronic pain the dying patient
- the palliative care management of non-pain symptoms
- cultural aspects of aging/dying
- pre-operative considerations, common post-operative complications
- age-related sensory impairments: management and adaptation
Dr. Meuleman is proud that two weeks is devoted to the geriatric curriculum.
He states that he has been doing it with bare bones group of faculty at GRECC. Enrique Rivera runs a geriatric clinic at Tower Hill. There will be a division of geriatrics with 6-7 faculty. Tom Mulligan from Richmond, VA will be the chair.Dr. Harrell asked if there were bigger guiding principles on more specific areas that have a geriatric aspect, and remarked that there needs to be some guiding aspects for students to fill in later.
