October 24, 2000 - Curriculum Committee Minutes

Announcements

Robert Watson: Dr. Watson announced that we were invited to participate in an AAMC project to describe "The Education of Medical Students. The Stories of Curriculum Change". Dr. Watson and Dr. Rooks would be authoring this article, and we are one of 10 schools invited to participate.

Dr. Rarey: The Evaluation Subcommittee continues to meet and is continuing to develop the plan for evaluation for courses and clerkships. This will be brought before the Curriculum Committee in January.

Dr. Genuardi: The Clerkship Directors are starting to review how the new student evaluation process is working. He reported that there is still no consensus of how to translate the system into grades. He'll have a follow-up retreat later in the year to continue to explore this.

It was announced that Dr. Ocie Harris will be leaving at the end of the month to take a position at the new FSU Medical School. He will be working on their curriculum design. Dr. Rooks will be replacing Dr. Harris, along with Alan Jameson as Director of the AHEC Program.

Agenda

Dr. Rooks led a discussion on the progress of our development of Curriculum and Professionalism. The intent was to break out into small groups to discuss several basic questions regarding professionalism, including:
1. What do we mean by professionalism?
2. What is the spectrum of professional behavior we should accept in our students, i.e. and our faculty?
3. How are we doing in instilling the highest standards in our graduates?
4. Do we need to do more or need to do less?
5. How should we proceed?

Dr. Rooks indicated that the Professionalism Task Force has completed its work, but the plan was to get into it from the Curriculum Committee before presenting this to determine if it should be modified further. Several members of the Committee stated we also needed input from clerkship and course directors, as well as department chairs. There was a consensus that the Committee wished to review what the Professionalism Task Force had done before proceeding with their own evaluation.

Dr. Rooks agreed to circulate the document created by the Professionalism Task Force and allow the Committee to review this before we proceeded any further.

The meeting adjourned at 8:35 a.m.
