Curriculum Committee Minutes - December 11, 2001

Announcements

Dr. Watson indicated that the Society of Teaching Scholars is up and running well. We have been asked by San Francisco to interview their candidates for the Society. Also, Harvard University is developing their own and has asked us for help in developing it.

Tim Jones was the Santa Claus at the student sponsored Jingle Bell Run this year.

Agenda

Discussion of the AAMC project on clinical education and medical students. Dr. Rooks handed out the conclusions of the project and members of the Committee were asked to award a grade to the University of Florida College of Medicine based on the various areas of concern. Members were asked to award an A, B, C, or D to our efforts here at the University:
1. Clarity of our teaching objectives and the relationship between grades
and mastery of material, score (2)Bs, (6)Cs, (5)Ds.
2. Lack of adequate teaching of fundamental clinical skills, comments
included that Emergency Medicine, the Harrell Center, and Pediatrics
were strong points on this. The Committee awarded this area (1)A, (11)Bs, (2)Cs.
3. Lack of appropriate patient population score (6)Bs, (3)Cs, (1)D.
4. Lack of adequate integration (4)Bs, (9)Cs, (1)D.
5. Lack of attention to creating adequate electives in a productive fourth year (1)A, (6)Bs, (3)Cs, and (4)Ds.
6. Lack of support for career development, (1)A, (7)Bs, (5)Cs, (1)D.
7. Lack of attention to resident teaching. Jacksonville does a very good job, but Gainesville has no coherent plan in institution, (5)Bs, (8)Cs, (1)D.
8. Lack of attention by departmental chairs to educational programs, (1)A, (4)Bs, (6)Cs, (1)D.
9. Lack of adequate centralized control of the curriculum. Most agree we are ahead of most places in this regard, (4)As, (8)Bs, (3)Cs.
