Curriculum Committee Meeting

Announcements
Doug Arnold stated that the second year class was working hard and the year was progressing successfully. Dr. Watson mentioned that he had recently attended a meeting regarding the expansion of the Harrell Center and commented on the future of the growth/building of the hospital and the need to meet the requirements of the future.
Agenda
Dr. Rarey presented the report by explaining all of the criteria that the courses and clerkships are evaluated by (see appendices of report). Data was presented and Dr. Rarey stressed the importance of the data was for the Curriculum Committee to be able to formulate objectives and criteria for the overall mission of the college.
Dr. Watson stated that the Curriculum Committee has made significant strides in determining competencies. He stated that the Office for Program and Faculty Development was to set and implement the overall best education practices in place set for by the Curriculum committee.
Dr. Burchfield asked Dr. Rare to explain to the committee how the external measures of the report were formulated. Dr. Normann also expressed a need for an explanation of the data.
Dr. Rathe brought up the issue of summative vs formative feedback. The committee discussed the question of clarification and the importance of stressing formative feedback from the faculty to students.
Dr. Rarey reminded the committee that all data and competencies are available online. He discussed that it is important that all faculty have access to data and criteria. He also suggested that the committee continue the review of the report at the next Curriculum Committee meeting. This would begin with a review of the 2nd year.
