USMLE Step 1 Performance: UFCOM Class of 2005 and Performance
Trends
Presentation by Lynn J. Romrell, Ph.D.
Dr. Romrell presented information on NBME Subject exams and the Steps 1 and 2 to see how our students are doing. In 1999, the exam became computer-based with results reported at end of the year. Data will not be available until next April. The data presented today is from last year.
Slide 1 shows the national distribution of scores of first time takers on USMLE Step 1 National (2002) and UF (June '03 - Class of 2005). Correlation of score on USMLE Step 1 with performance predictors.
Slide 2 Distribution of Scores of First Time Takers on USMLE Step 1 National (2002) an UF (June '03 - Class of '05).
Slide 3 Identifies the Mean Overall GPA of Matriculants through 2007.
Slide 4 Identifies the Mean Overall GPA of Matriculants through 2005.
Failure rate on Step 1 has been around 10%; Step 2 failure rate, around 5%.
Dr. Tisher asked if there was a breakdown of tje content of Step 2 to know where students were having the most difficulty. Dr. Romrell reported that the NBME has kept it a confidential up until last year. He stated that we can look at the subject exam but, basically, the pool of questions come from the same writers.
Students can take Step 3 any time during their 4th year. The early takers do
well. This year, the class of 2005 has to pass the standardized patient component.
Dr. Watson indicated that we need to restructure the 4th year curriculum very
carefully. Residency programs are now requiring students pass Steps 1 and 2
before they are accepted into residency; if they do not have a passing score,
they cannot get into the match program.
