The meeting was devoted to an overview of how the education evaluation system of the College should be functioning and its structural components. As introductory materials for this discussion, five concept maps had been developed which provide outlines of the overall system and its components addressing student, faculty, course/clerkship, and curriculum evaluations. In addition, Pat Alguire had presented at a previous meeting a student evaluation matrix and had an additional matrix pertaining to faculty evaluations.
Parker Small walked the group through the components, in each case followed by ample discussion.
1. Education Program Evaluation System. This represents an overview of all evaluations and how the components of the system relate to each other. An a priori condition for effective evaluations is that they are based or defined by criteria, i.e. goals and objectives of the educational program. Another important aspects are clear understanding of the purpose of each assessment and how the data are being packaged, distributed and analyzed. Finally, data and feedback must reach their audiences in a timely manner.
The discussion focused on the following:
2. Student Evaluation. This concept map attempts to indicate the student competencies to be assessed, how data can be obtained. There were many comments and criticisms:
3. Faculty Evaluation Concept Map. Parker Small explained that the course and clerkship directors have a dual role as administrators and teachers. Any empowerment of the course and clerkship director to evaluate their teachers helps them in their administrative role.
4. Faculty Evaluation Matrix by Pat Alguire. At the previous meeting, the Committee reviewed a matrix for student evaluations identifying the student competencies to be assessed on the abscissa and the modalities to be used for assessment on the ordinate. He presented a similar matrix for faculty evaluation. On the ordinate, three more categories of criteria were suggested: (4) Educational Community Services; (5) Teaching Materials; and (6) Evaluations. In category 3, Personal Characteristics, items f and g should be changed to "clinical skills teaching and "research skills teaching." It was further mentioned that the column "Faculty Portfolio" may be labelled "Other Educational Efforts." Finally, a column labelled "Self Evaluation," should be added as an important data modality.
The members of the subcommittee are encouraged to review carefully the concept maps and send any suggestions toManny Suter; 392-5998; Fax: 392-6482. The easiest is to enter your suggestion on the concept map, put your name on it and send by Fax.
See you February 12.
