Margaret Duerson: Performanced-based Evaluation presentation

On 4th year exam: report, done in July of 4th yr. One of two schools is chosen to put on this sequential test. Only 1 of 8 research sites will have electronic data capture. Twelve standardized patient cases are used. Looking to see the performance between form A and form B (chart on overhead). NBME has decided not to go forward with testing. The entering class of 2002 will probably have to take this test to pass their boards for licensure.

Triple jump: present student with a problem; go off to library to find info; return and interate information into the problem solution; Examiner is examining the student's search skills. One and one-half standard deviation from the mean is passing. Our approach to remediation is based on the advisory committee choosing students andreviewing video tapes and recommending what should be done to remediate that student. There is some discussion but it seldom changes. Dr. Rooks asked if we can we make a decision to decide on criteria for remediation? Dr. Small says you either fix committee or ignore what was said and use data. Dr. Watson agreed it takes both. Use the data to be more specific. We need to see if remediation does work by retaking the OSCE.

Dr. Romrell: the chair of OSCE committee has the same power as course director. It comes under the ASC to approve remediation.

This discussion will be continued at next meeting. We will also talk about all three PBEs and how data is assessed and how it affects the ASC.

Meeting adjourned.
