Absent

Next meeting is June 23, 1999 (4th Wednesday of the month meetings).

Today's Agenda:

Dr. Rooks announced an open forum meeting to talk on evaluation at 4:30 in CG75.

By sending evaluation plan out to all chairs of the basic nd clinical science departments, it has created some discussion. The department chairs are asking if we're requiring too much of the course directors; in particular, faculty instruction was questioned the most.

Dr. Rooks spoke on the faculty evaluation issue:

The perception that is that we are getting out of our territory of responsibility. Also, the relationship of developing the evaluation plan and COMEC. Is it realistic to expect course directors to evaluate their peers and sometimes their peers who are senior to them? The original plan was to give course directors more independence. This seems to be a Curriculum Committee issue. Dr. Rooks was not clear if changing the wording in the plan resolved the problem.

Dr. Watson indicated that the final message on basic science meeting is that it is a turf issue; they want control but don't want to do the work. The bottom line is that the chairs recognize a shift in governance.

Dr. Small noted that this feedback was necessary, and may be unrealistic. The Curriculum Committee may need some advice from us to resolve this problem.

Dr. Rarey requested that the group look over Dr. Kellner's OB/GYN syllabus for 99-00. Dr. Kellner gave a synopsis of the syllabus.

The Advisor Committee for PBEs (Duerson, Hatch) is taking shape. Dr. Duerson stated that we need to decide in July how we are going to review them, as reports are due July 1.

Dr. Rarey reported that all clerkship reports and all semester reports are due September 1.

Dr. Rooks announced that he is mailing the course report revision request. It is being refined and due July 15. He suggested that it is to be counted as the course report for curriculum as well.

Dr. Rarey noted that we may need to make a decision about combining the two reports into one.

Meeting adjourned 1:45 pm. Next meeting will be June 23, 1999.
