Templates were passed out (Margie sent out through email) for the basic science courses and clerkships.
The question was asked: how do you measure the quality of an educational endeavor?
Response: We need to discuss what the elements are and we need a prototype to assess what's going on in the curriculum so that we can maintain a database.
Dr. Small indicated the course and clerkship directors were the key pople for the curriculum. We need them to be empowered, rewarded and required to do more in terms of presenting the course to an Evaluation Subcommittee and/or the Curriculum Committee (CC) to allow the CC to know what was happening and in a way to give a continuity to the students. In other words, we need a document that summarizes the course.
What about the program-based budget issue?
Dr. Kellner asked: Do we want the course and clerkship directors evaluating their own courses?
Education has to be valued. Since the clerkship directors meet each month, by the next meeting we need a prototype to get feedback from the current course directors.
It was mentioned by Dr. Small that we need to see a template filled out for both basic and clinical science courses as a sample, and that this would drive us to a second draft. We need a pilot.
Below is an outline of that steps we need to take before the next meeting:
Go over the clinical template Give a brief overview Give an example in response to this template Get the data from Dr. Romrell We need a page from Dr. Kellner's OB/GYN clerkship report as a sample
A) Review of first draft template for clerkships goals/objectives:
- copy of which is shared with students
- changes made from previous years (concerns) problems identified in previous report
- actions taken
B) Methods of Teaching:
- What percent of instructional time is for devoted to lectures, conferences, clinical teaching, rounds, or, bedside teaching, patient contact teaching, small group discussions?
- How much time for student/attending there is as opposed to student/resident
- Bulk of what students learn comes from residents
- How many hours a student takes working up patients; how many hours of supervision
It was decided that Drs. Small and Kellner would meet to discuss the clinical template before next meeting. Dr. Koroly will prepare an example of basic science template with her biochemistry course.
At the next meeting, October 29, we will have both documents in draft form.
It was suggested that a questionnaire be sent out to the course/clerkship directors to find out if they do annual summaries of evaluations--not for content but for structure to course/clerkship directors.
Suggested future meeting dates are: November 12 and November 26 in Room M112.
