Staff: Cynthia Karle, Lou Ann Cooper, Victoria Justice (recording)Dr. Rarey reviewed the "Structure & Content" document in regards to the 25-hour student-contact. He also explained that during the LCME review process the college should internally review the process.
Dr. Rooks explained that there is variability in the 25-hour plan, thus a review is appropriate with emphasis of the weekly student schedule. Dr. Rooks explained to the ESC that originally the CC initiated the process in review of student schedule of the past.
Dr. Rarey suggested that the role of the ESC should be to review the process and report the data to the CC for an internal evaluation.
Dr. Romrell displayed an example of the weekly schedule to the committee. He reviewed the number of lecture hours and clinical self study time that is allocated. Dr. Romrell stressed that the online student schedules do not always reflect an actual time allotment.
Dr. Romrell suggested to the committee to involve course/clerkship directors to include details in their course reports in regards to time allocations.
Emily Goldberg expressed that during certain weeks the number of lectures can be overwhelming.
Dr. Rarey outlined the review of the "Grade Competency Distributions" handout.
Dr. Rooks stated that he grade competencies should reflect student performance on the national boards.
Dr. Kellner suggested that maybe the college should institute two different formats of evaluation (1) criteria based (2) performance based.
Dr. Rooks referred to the histogram of the Dean's letter.
Dr. Rarey stated that a review of the competencies is paramount.
Dr. Rarey stated that the committee would continue discussion of student structure and content findings in the next ESC meeting scheduled for March 23, 2005.
