Minutes
Evaluation Subcommittee
August 25, 2004
12:00 p.m. Hugh Hill Conference Room

Attendance: Ritz, Rooks, Rarey, Hahn, Karle, Goldberg, Tracey, and Lee Recording: Victoria Justice

Dr. Rarey announced that Bill Allen had stepped down from the committee. (Dr. Rarey asked the committee to make suggestions of new "clerkship" applicants). He also stated that he would like to recruit two new members on the committee.

Dr. Rarey presented to the committee the numeric and narrative statistics from the evaluation of the 8 fall courses and 1 spring course that had been recently reviewed. He thanked the committee for their time.

Dr. Rarey asked Dr. Rooks if he felt the past 6-7 years of having a review process in place had an impact on faculty perception. Dr. Rooks expressed that he felt that the implementation of the course and clerkship review process had a positive impact for him as an instructor and referenced the detailed course syllabus that is now required. He said that he felt that having the course syllabus so detailed was a great aid. Molrine Tracy added that from a student perspective the changes over the last few years with the structure of the current course syllabus have greatly improved. She also commented on the increased involvement of the course directors and it's positive influence.

Dr. Rarey mentioned objectives to reiterate to the curricular committee. "Formal mid-course written feedback". This led to a discussion among Dr. Ritz & Rooks about the way Dr. Ritz communicates with his student mid course (does he meet with them, make suggestions on how they can improve) the committee commented that A's or B's were considered passing grades and acceptable and C or below would merit intervention from the professor or Assoc. Dean. Dr. Rarey stated that LCME requires that directors establish a system that is to accommodate both course instructors and students. (Dr. Rooks suggested an exam "formative feedback" be in place). Dr. Ritz asked committee members (students) if they felt mid-course formative feedback was implemented in all of the courses. Dr. Ritz then suggested finding out which current courses are not implementing the mid-course formative feedback plan.

Dr. Rarey then led the committee on a discussion of the Spring Courses:

  1. MMID-Scores were consistent with those of the past year.
  2. EPCII-Submitted syllabus & written report. The committee noted substantial improvement.
  3. Human Genetics-Dr. Rarey noted that the course was evaluated less highly. Narrative feedback was good but students would like to see more organization.
  4. Systemic Pathology & Lab Medicine-Very good (perfect) 4.0. Dr. Rarey noted that Bill Winter would be the director.
  5. Oncology (W&S)- Positive organized syllabus; 2.8 feedback was not. It was noted that this is a "pass/fail" course. The feedback from students was that maybe this course should be renamed as "empathy" or should it be combined with EPC because they felt that there was not a lot of clinical oncology application presented even though it was included on the course exams. The consensus was that a student received more instruction in oncology in the pathology course. Dr. Rarey felt like this is a topic that should be brought before the curriculum committee.

Meeting was adjourned @ 12:55 with four spring courses to review at the next committee meeting on September 8, 2004.
