Agenda: Overview of the structure and components of the PBE Continuum by Drs. Rebecca R. Pauly and Margaret Duerson.

Drs. Pauly and Duerson presented 28 slides on the PBE Continuum. Dr. Duerson led the presentation showing slides of the components of the PBE.

Dr. Duerson explained that the Human Resources of the PBE included: standardized patients, physical exam teaching associates, gynecological teaching associates, and male urinary teaching associates.

Dr. Rarey asked for the total number in Human Resources. Dr. Duerson reported there were 150 standardized patients, 10 physical exam teaching associates, 12 gynecological teaching associates, and 3-4 male urinary teaching associates.

During the presentation, three handouts were distributed to the committee concerning examples of testing applications in determining the students’ level of skills.

Discussion:

The committee discussed concerns about the PBE I 2005 failed stations. The data reported students scored less than 70% percent. The committee addressed the issue of whether the mean scores for the PBE 2 2005 results were lower because of technical or integrated errors. It was explained that the mean scores were more of technical errors than integrated.

Dr. Novak explained that the PBE data indicated that 3rd year students were better prepared over the last several years and PBE was a good program.

Dr. Pauly explained that human resources and workshops were avenues for the remediation of students to prepare PBE 3. The workshops focus on problem solving approaches and parallel cases. Dr. Ritz stated that the importance of PBE was explained in orientation for all students.

The next Evaluation Subcommittee meeting will be held at 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 in Rm. R1-106. Dr. Rarey requested the committee review the course and clerkships reports as well as continue the discussion of the PBE continuum.

Dr. Rarey suggested having a group of students give feedback about the PBE as well as Dr. Kenneth Keller, Lou Ann Cooper, and other members of the committee not associated with PBE taking on leading roles for PBE.

Dr. Rarey informed the committee of the upcoming meetings listed below. An email was sent to all members of the committee as a reminder for the upcoming meeting. October 12, 2005, October 26, 2005, November 9, 2005, November 30, 2005 December 14, 2005
