The monthly ESC will be held on December 8, 2004.
Agenda: Dr. Lou Ritz & Cynthia Karle presenting competency data of Class of 2002 vs. 3rd year medical student.
Dr. Ritz/Cynthia Karle presented data to the committee that included comparison graphs of competency scores, scoring of the third year clerkship for the academic year 2003-04 and average score on the clerkship competency by clerkship for the academic year 2003-04. Members of the committee made multiple comments:
Dr. Kellner-Noted that the scores of residents should be reflective of the questionnaire sent to the directors of the resident program. He felt that a cover letter that explains the goals and objectives of the survey should be included with the survey form.
Dr. Duerson-Noted that residents that participate in the Harrell Center program are surveyed. Dr. Duerson also expressed concern of a more discriminating/objective survey.
Dr. Rooks-Asked what the objectives are of the reports. Concern was expressed about the discrimination of the survey.
Dr. Kellner-Asked if the residency program directors could use the same form to evaluate residents that the 3rd year students use. Dr. Kellner asked the committee what other medical schools are doing to evaluate graduates in residency.
Open Discussion:
The committee discussed possible ways to improve the current survey. Dr. Rarey mentioned the importance of keeping the survey to one page. The committee members commented on the scoring system and general consensus was that more discriminate scoring should be in place. The question of using the same format that the COM currently uses for 3rd year students was addressed.
Overall consensus of the committee was that the importance of data received from reports such as the competency data of Class of 2002 vs. 3rd year medical students is very important to the development of improved curriculum and standards for our students.
