Elective Description:

This four-credit elective is designed to prepare senior medical students for teaching responsibilities that they will assume as an intern and resident. Interactive sessions will offer practical strategies for how to be an effective teacher. Topics will include adult learning theory, bedside teaching, giving feedback, and evaluating students. Students will also learn how to prepare a teaching portfolio. Upon fulfillment of all elective requirements, they will be certified as a resident teacher.

The rationale for this elective is that despite the expanded teaching role that interns and residents have, there exists no formal preparation for these responsibilities; in addition, documentation of teaching activities.
