Course Descriptions for 4th Year Medical Students

The fourth year is divided into 11 four-week units (4 credit hours each). Students must be enrolled for 10 of the 11 four-week units. At the beginning of the year, students plan their own curriculum with the approval of their advisor and the fourth-year coordinator.

The senior year includes four required courses: a 4-week Acting Internship in Medicine, Pediatrics, or Family medicine; a 4-week Emergency Medicine Clerkship; a 2-week Geriatrics Clerkship; and a 2-week clerkship in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. The remaining seven units consist of elective courses and clerkships offered by the basic science and clinical departments. One 4-week unit may be scheduled as free time to be used for residency interviews. Rules governing the required clerkships and elective courses taken in the fourth year are outlined in the Senior Elective Catalog. Students may choose from over 200 electives listed in this catalogue.
