Probation & Dismissal
Students who fail to achieve satisfactory progress are placed on probation or dismissed. The purposes of probation are: to identify unsatisfactory performance at an early date; to provide an opportunity for the student to seek academic or personal counseling; to provide the student with further opportunity to perform satisfactorily; and to notify the student that satisfactory progress is not being made toward the standards required for graduation.
Failure to achieve mastery of course competencies and/or a passing grade in remediated coursework or unsuccessful performance on a PBE following remediation may result in dismissal. In accordance with University regulations, any student with a grade point average less than 2.0 is placed on probation.
STUDENTS, WHO ARE PLACED ON PROBATION, WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DISMISSED IF A GRADE OF LESS THAN C IS RECEIVED IN ANY COURSE DURING THE TIME PERIOD WHILE ON PROBATION. IF THE COURSEWORK IS SATISFACTORILY COMPLETED, STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE ON PROBATION FOR AN ADDITIONAL CALENDAR YEAR, AT WHICH TIME THE STUDENT MAY BE REMOVED FROM PROBATION BY FAVORABLE ACTION OF THE ACADEMIC STATUS COMMITTEE. Students who are allowed to repeat fourth year coursework will remain on probation until they have successfully completed all of the requirements for graduation. The Committee will review annually the status of all students on probation.
As a general rule, a student will only be allowed to repeat one year of the four-year curriculum because of poor academic performance. An exception to this rule may be made in highly selected instances if 80% of the eligible voting members of the Academic Status Committee approve.
The Decompressed Academic Schedule ("2 in 3 Program")
In highly select circumstances, students may be allowed to have a decompressed schedule that permits them to complete the basic science curriculum in three, rather than two, years. As a general rule, proposals for this modified curriculum may be made by the Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, Associate Dean for Medical Education, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, or the College of Medicine Counselor, after consultation with Basic Science course directors.
Examples of situations that may justify the decompressed schedule include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The student is a parent, particularly a single parent, of a young child and needs to decompress his/her academic schedule to maintain the stability of the family.
- The student has a newly recognized and well-documented medical or psychological condition or a learning disability which has adversely affected his/her academic performance, and the condition or disability is such that it cannot be addressed by the usual College of Medicine accommodations. For the purposes of this policy, documentation of the medical or psychological condition or learning disability must be made by approved sources such as the UF Psychology Clinic, UF Student Mental Health Services, UF Outpatient Psychiatry Service, or the Office of Student Counseling and Development.
Prior to consideration for this decompressed schedule, the student must have demonstrated clear evidence of the ability to succeed academically. The student also must have demonstrated a consistently high standard of professional behavior.
All proposals for a decompressed academic schedule must be considered and approved by the Academic Status Committee.
If a student fails to make satisfactory progress while in the decompressed schedule, he/she will be subject to adverse academic action, including dismissal from school. The student will have the right to appeal such a decision directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine.
