Minority students at the College of Medicine engage in several activites to benefit other students and the Gainesville community. Several of these events are listed below.
Project Haiti
Many students at UF college of Medicine share their prospective skills and compassion with the less fortunate overseas. Project Haiti and Dominican Republic Health are both very popular medical mission trips. Students travel to there countries during their spring vacation and provide medical care and supplies.
Saint Francis House Volunteer Project
This is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide emergency food, temporary shelter and related support services for homeless and poor individuals of Gainesville, FL. Several UF College of Medicine students spend a few hours on their weekend afternoons serving hot food to Gainesville's indigent population.
Accepted Student Weekend
During this event, accepted minority medical students are given the opportunity of revisiting the University of Florida College of Medicine. It is a unique experience which allows accepted students to meet faculty, deans, medical students, mentors and minority medical students as well as expose them to the tremendous resources available for minority medical students at the University of Florida. These students will be given the opportunity to shadow a physicain, sit in first year classes and most importantly befriend future peers and classmates.
Humanitarian and Educational Medical Mission Trip
This trip is aimed at providing free health care to international undersierved populations. The trip is staffed by volunteer physicians, medical students and pharmacy students.
Eastside High School Sex Education
This program was developed to educate high scholl students about sucually transmitted diseases and prevention. It was also designed to promote a strong sense of self esteem and good health. Several minority UF College of Medicine students visit East Side High School thorugh out the school year and spend a day speaking with the freshmand studnes. It is always a rewarding and entertaining experience.
Warm Fingers and Toes Volunteer Project
During the Christmas holidays, Minority students at UF College of Medicine have their respective med school classes donate mittens, scarves, sacks, gloves and hats for familiesin the community who are less fortunate during the winter months. This charitable effort is always a big hit.
