FACULTY

PRIMARY FACULTY

The primary faculty in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics have responsibilities in research, teaching and professional service.  They establish independent but interactive research programs that are focused on fundamental biological problems related to our understanding of disease or their treatments.  Research programs are supported by investigator initiated extramural grants and discoveries are communicated through peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, reviews, presentations at scientific meetings and by invited seminars.  Faculty excellence in research, determined by their peers in the research community, can lead to recognition or service that promotes the scientific discipline at the national and international level.  Recent recognition and service activities of the faculty have included:

Bradley Fletcher, M.D., Ph.D.
Grant Review Committee, Scientific Foundation of Ireland

Maria Grant, M.D.
State of Florida, Governors Advisory Panel on Treatment and Research of Diabetes

Jeffrey Harrison, Ph.D.
Book Co-Editor: The Chemokine Receptors, Humana Press

William Kem, Ph.D.
Book Co-Editor: Marine Toxins As Research Tools, Springer-Verlag

Brian Law, Ph.D.
Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award

Roger Papke, Ph.D.
Platform Speaker: Welcome Trust Conference on Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors

Philip Scarpace, Ph.D.
Keynote Speaker: The Obesity Society

Kathy Shiverick, Ph.D.
Journal Editor: Trophoblast Research

David Silverman, Ph.D.
Chair, Gordon Research Conference on Isotopes in Biological and Chemical Sciences

Nihal Tumer, Ph.D.
Chair, Fellowship Committee, The Gerontological Society of America

Faculty research is the foundation for the development of the next generation of investigators. Undergraduate, graduate student and postdoctoral fellows initiate or expand their research expertise under the mentorship of the primary faculty. Training in the scientific method includes hypothesis development, experimental design, technical execution, data analysis, interpretation and integration. Student and postdoctoral fellows also gain experience in manuscript and grant writing and develop oral communication skills.

RESEARCH FACULTY

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics supports and promotes the careers of a selected number of Research Faculty. These individuals have completed several years of postdoctoral training and are performing independent or mentored research projects during a transition to primary faculty or other positions. Research faculty are mainly supported by extramural grants but they also contribute to the educational and service missions of the department.

JOINT APPOINTMENTS

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics has a significant number of joint appointee faculty members. These individuals have primary faculty status in other University of Florida academic departments but also have formal interactions with Pharmacology and Therapeutics for mutual benefit. Interactions which can lead to a joint faculty appointment include productive long-term research collaborations, professional student teaching in the discipline, and mentoring of graduate students or postdoctoral fellows.
