RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research involves the use of catalytic RNAs (hammerheadsand hairpins ribozymes) to elucidate the pathways in angiogenesis (thedevelopment of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones) and apoptosis(programmed cell death), and potentially to use these ribozymes in gene therapyprotocols to treat diseases that stimulate neovascularization. Currently we arestudying the progression of angiogenesis in diabetic retinopathy, which is theleading cause of blindness in adults in the U.S. Please see the listing under Dr. Maria Grant for more information on this research.
