RESEARCH INTERESTS

During my career as an organic chemist in Hungary and now in the USA, my efforts have largely focused upon the isolation, structure determination and organic synthesis and transformation of naturally occurring compounds in plants, and more recently (projects with Dr. Kem), in marine animals. Thes natural products, besides presenting new chemical structures of interest to chemists, frequently possess useful medicinal or pesticidal properties. Consequently, they often serve as lead compounds for the design of new drugs. Current projects include (1) isolation and structure elucidation of sea worm alkaloids which affect nicotinic and other receptors, (2) synthesizing new compounds related to the Alzheimer's drug candidate GTS-21 (See Kem Interests) which selectively activate particular nicotinic receptors, and (3) synthesis of peptidemimetic analogs of an immunosuppressant peptide ShK, isolated from a Carribean sea anemone. The major methods I use for structure identification are NMR and mass spectrometric techniques. I also utilize medium and high pressure chromatographic (HPLC) methods to purify synthetic as well as natural products.
