Research focus: Tracking the developmental presence of the ACTH precursor, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) in various peripheral fetal tissues. Because ACTH is an integral member of the fetal stress axis (hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal axis), the presence/absence of ACTH can be used as a marker, which signifies maturation of fetal organs. This information can ultimately be used to predict the timing of parturition. For some more information regarding POMC click here.
Long term goal: I would like to apply the information gathered from the Wood lab into a clinical setting.
