LODGING

For patients from out-of-town, there are many places to stay in Gainesville. Many are located at the I-75 interchanges. For example, at Exit 384, the Archer Road interchange, you will find Motel 6, Cabot Lodge, Super 8, ExtendedStay America, and Archer House Ramada. The University Centre Hotel is just across the street from Shands Hospital (about two blocks from the Cancer Center). Other hotels and motels are located on US 441, both north and south of Archer Road, as well as at the other I-75 exits in or near Gainesville. If you plan to stay overnight in Gainesville, we suggest that you call beforehand for a reservation; hotels and motels are sometimes booked up because of the many sports events and conferences held in Gainesville.

Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge

Sponsored by Winn-Dixie food stores and the American Cancer Society, the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge offers free home-style accommodations for patients undergoing cancer treatment in Gainesville (and their spouses).  Referrals can be obtained through our department. However, there is usually a waiting list, so you probably will not be able to move into Hope Lodge immediately when you start treatment. You should be prepared to stay elsewhere for a while.

Ronald McDonald House

Sponsored by McDonald's restaurants, the Ronald McDonald House offers accommodations for families while a child is undergoing cancer treatment or other kinds of major therapy in Gainesville. The cost is $10 per day, although this is sometimes waived. Referrals can be obtained through our department. There may be a waiting list.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society has limited funds, provided entirely by donations. Local Cancer Society branches generally offer some specific types of information and assistance to local residents with cancer. You should check with your local ACS branch to determine what kinds of assistance they may offer you. In Gainesville, the ACS operates the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge and offers some other types of assistance to patients undergoing cancer treatment at the University of Florida - Shands Hospital. You can inquire in our department or at the Hope Lodge for specific information.

FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS

A financial counselor will meet with you when you are first seen in our department and again as needed to assist you with financial arrangements. Our department is a preferred provider for many insurance plans, and also treats patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid. If you need specific information about charges or insurance coverage before you come to the department, call Bobbi Moody at 352-265-0316. If she cannot answer your specific question, she can refer you to the proper source of information.
