General Outline for Grant Writing Course

Goal:

To help participants understand the grant making process and to demonstrate basic grant writing concepts with a focus on the national institutes of health

Objectives:

Familiarize participants with selected sponsor websites
Provide skills for successful grant application preparation

Instructor:

Dr. Elaine Young, Office of Research Development, COM

Classes:

Two, 1-hour classes per week

Prerequisites:

Knowledge of english language and basic written communication skills

WEEK 1	INTRODUCTION/COURSE OUTLINE AND DEADLINES OVERVIEW OF THE GRANT PROCESS PLANNING AN APPLICATION DEVELOPING A HYPOTHESIS WRITING AN APPLICATION - ABSTRACT PRELIMINARY DATA SPECIFIC AIMS TIMELINE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION FINDING A SPONSOR
WEEK 2	NIH STRUCTURE, ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES DISCUSSION - TELEPHONE CONTACT REVIEW PROCESS
WEEK 3	CONSTRUCTING AN APPLICATION - FORMS FEDERAL COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF RESEARCH
WEEK 4	DISCUSSION OF ABSTRACTS APPLICATIONS DUE UNIVERSITY COMPLIANCE BUDGET REVIEW ASSIGNMENTS
WEEK 5	REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS
WEEK 6	FINISH REVIEWS MANAGING YOUR GRANT CONTINUATION GRANTS WHAT IF YOU'RE NOT FUNDED - REVISIONS MORE WRITING TIPS OPEN SESSION WORKSHOP EVALUATION

Homework assignments include:

Locating an RFA or PA
Locating a Program and a Study Section
Developing a telephone introduction
Writing an abstract and a short proposal
Reviewing 2 grant proposals
