- 3/06/2008 | Funding Opportunities for Cancer Researchers
American Cancer Society (deadline 4/1/08)
Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control and Prevention: Health Services and Health Policy Research - Awards are for up to four years and for up to $200,000 per year (direct costs). Eligibility Criteria: These grants are open to investigators at any stage of their career.
Postdoctoral Fellowships - This award is to support the training of researchers to enable them to qualify for an independent career in cancer research (including basic, preclinical, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, and epidemiologic research). Awards are made for one to three years with progressive stipends of $40,000, $42,000, and $44,000 per year, plus a $4,000 per year institutional allowance. *US citizen or permanent residency status is required.
Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation (pre-proposals due 6/2/08) - The Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award is designed to provide support for the next generation of exceptionally creative thinkers with "high risk/high reward" ideas that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. The Innovation award is specifically designed to provide funding for extraordinary early career researchers who have an innovative new idea but lack sufficient preliminary data to obtain traditional funding. It is not designed to fund incremental advances. The research supported by the award must be novel, exceptionally creative and, if successful, have the strong potential for high impact in the cancer field. Applicants must belong to one of the following categories: Senior Postdoctoral Fellows and highly motivated recent PhD and MD graduates who are pursuing a period of independent research before taking a faculty position.
Please contact Karen Pastos (pastos@ufl.edu, 273-5874) if you have questions regarding either of these funding opportunities.
- 2/11/2008 | NIH Freezes Postdoc Stipend Levels
The NIH announced this week that NRSA stipend levels for postdoctoral fellows and trainees in FY2008 would be held at FY2007 levels. This decision continues a pattern that began in 2007, when stipends were held at FY2006 levels. This trend falls far short of the NIH’s pledge to increase stipend amounts by 10-12 percent per year during the earlier part of this decade, and to ensure that stipends would keep pace with inflation thereafter (see text of NIH pledge from 2001 below). The NPA is disappointed with the NIH’s decision to freeze postdoctoral stipends for two successive years, and intends to communicate its concerns to the NIH leadership. Because so many institutions base their postdoctoral salaries on the NRSA stipend scale, this decision will have far-reaching implications for many more postdocs than just the fellows and trainees supported on NRSAs.
