1. Searching for Pharma/Biotech Postdocs to Speak at NIH Conference
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Working Group on Women in Biomedical Careers is hosting a workshop: Women in Biomedical Research: Best Practices for Sustaining Career Success on March 4, 2008, that will feature systems approaches used by businesses, military, academic health centers, professional societies, and the NIH to ensure continued success as well as consider the economic cost of leadership loss and providing infrastructure to sustain the careers of women. The planning committee is searching for speakers for the panel, Models for Advancement in Pharma, Biotech, and Other Businesses, to showcase best practices for the sustained career success of women in biomedical research. 2. New Tax Article for Postdocs
The NPA has added a new article to its Postdoc resource page: Overview of Tax Issues for Postdocs. It provides information and resources on the tax issues facing postdocs. Topics include: tax withholding, reporting fellowship income, filing estimated taxes, FICA, self-employment tax and taxes for the international postdoc.

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for postdoctoral researchers at federal laboratories. These awards provide generous stipends ($41,000 - $70,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients and higher for additional experience), and the opportunity to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the country.
Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply online, and a list of participating laboratories, is available on the rap@nas.edu.
