Research Compliance - Animal Subjects

Animal Subjects

For university purposes, animal usage includes the use of live, vertebrate animals for testing, research, or instructional purposes as well as the use of non-living vertebrate materials and the noninvasive observation of wildlife. All faculty, staff, and students using vertebrate animals or their tissues, regardless of location or funding, must obtain approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) before funds can be released, or teaching laboratories or experiments have begun.

IACUC which is mandated by two federal laws (Animal Welfare Act and the Health Research Extension Act), reviews all university-related activities that involve the use of animals. The IACUC reports to the Vice President for Research and is granted authority to suspend research and teaching programs that do not conform to federal, state or university regulations and policies regarding animal use.

Requests for approval must be submitted using the University of Florida Animal Approval form. The IACUC review and approval process generally takes four to six weeks. IACUC meetings are open to researchers and the public.

If you do not have security clearance to Animal Resources, please see Kathy Ward for submitting the documents and getting this clearance. If not, please call the office when you arrive and someone will make arrangements to meet you at the elevators or the doors. Using the elevators at the entrance to the Medical Library seems to work well for most people. Use the phone located near the elevators.
