4. From FYI: NSF: Proposals Must Address Merit Review Criteria or They Will Be Returned

In 1997 the National Science Board approved the use of two merit review criteria, and since then has continued to emphasize the importance of broader impacts in the preparation and review of proposals submitted to NSF.
In an effort to increase compliance with these requirements, the January 2002 issuance of the Grant Proposal Guide incorporated revised proposal preparation guidelines relating to the development of the Project Summary and Project Description. The GPG now specifies that Principal Investigators must address both merit review criteria in separate statements within the one-page Project Summary. The GPG also reiterates that broader impacts resulting from the proposed project must be addressed in the Project Description and described as an integral part of the narrative. In addition, the FastLane system has been enhanced to remind/inform PIs of the new proposal preparation requirements. There is also increased coverage of these requirements on the NSF website.

Effective October 1, 2002, NSF will return without review proposals that do not separately address both merit review criteria within the Project Summary. NSF believes that these changes to the proposal preparation and processing guidelines will more clearly articulate the importance of broader impacts to NSF-funded projects.

5. From FYI: UF Task Force on Bioterrorism Seeks Interest/Information for Future Grant Applications

The UF Task Force on Bioterrorism is establishing a data file containing ongoing projects and faculty expertise in any area related to bioterrorism and emerging infectious diseases. This is part of the planning stage prior to submitting grant applications to federal agencies for new funds for projects in this area. Such projects will be multidisciplinary over a broad range of disciplines and could include faculty and projects from virtually any college.

If you have funded or even unfunded projects related to this area or particular expertise that could apply to bioterrorism and/or emerging infectious diseases, please reply to this message within 2 weeks of receiving it. Of special interest are technologies for early detection, animal health, insect vectors, the safety of food and water supplies, vaccines, human pathogens, new antimicrobials, psychological responses to terror, public health education, and human interface with prevention/ detection/ response techniques and technology. However, this is not an exclusive list.

Please send a short description (1-2 paragraphs) of your project/expertise, as well as contact information (name, departmental affiliation, e-mail, phone university address) to Dr. Richard Gutekunst at Rgutekun@vpha.health.ufl.edu  (Posted 08/02/02)
