From FYI Digest: UF Research Funding Up 15% to Record $437.2M

Double-digit increases from almost every major funding source pushed the University of Florida to a record $437.2 million in research funding during fiscal year 2001-02, up more than 15% from the previous year.

UF’s Health Science Center accounted for just over half of the university’s total, with its six colleges receiving a record $225.3 million, up 14%. Funding from the National Institutes of Health — Florida’s largest source of research funding — rose 11.2% to $103.9 million.

Federal money accounts for 60% of UF’s total research funding and this year reached $268.1 million, up more than 18% over last year. The university also continues to build its relationships with private funding agencies. Florida received nearly $54 million from industry sponsors in 2001-02 and another $48.3 million from foundations. (Posted 08/30/02)

NSF Publishes Revised Grant Proposal Guide; Effective for October 1 Submissions

In the January 2002 Grant Proposal Guide (GPG), NSF published revised proposal preparation guidelines relating to completion of the Project Summary and Project Description. PIs were instructed that they must address both merit review criteria in the preparation of proposals submitted to NSF. The GPG specifies that proposers must clearly
address, in separate statements within the one-page limitation, both of the NSF merit review criteria in the Project Summary. The GPG also reiterates that broader impacts resulting from the proposed project must be addressed in the Project Description and described as an integral part of the narrative. Examples illustrating activities likely to demonstrate broader impacts are available electronically on the NSF website at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2003/nsf032/bicexamples.pdf.

These changes must be carefully considered by PIs when preparing proposals for submission to NSF. Effective October 1, 2002, proposals that do not address the two merit review criteria in separate statements in the project summary will be returned without review.

You may address questions or comments about the GPG to the Policy Office, Division of Grants and Agreements, at (703) 292-8243 or by e-mail to policy@nsf.gov. (Posted 08/30/02)
