WHAT'S NEW

1) 2002 UFRF Professorships.

Vice President Phillips has announced the selection criteria for 2002 UFRF Professorships.  The College of Medicine will be able to select 5 professorships to be awarded.   Our timeline for nomination and selection is tight so please give this immediate attention.  Nominations should come to the Office for Research Affairs, M-134, by 5pm on February 22, 2002.  As you know this is a three-year term award that is accompanied by a $5,000 annual supplement and a one-time $3,000 grant to support research.

Associate and Full Professors who are tenured and have been on the UF faculty for at least 5 years are eligible.  Faculty are eligible for nomination following a two-year hiatus after holding a previous UFRF Professorship.  (Anyone funded in 1997 or before will become eligible again.)

Candidates must have a distinguished CURRENT research program that places them among the leaders in their discipline.  This is measured over the last five years.  The work must also indicate that the program is likely to lead to continuing distinction in his/her field.

Examples of objective criteria include:

·        Citation analysis, where appropriate

All Nominations MUST include (at minimum):

(1) A supporting letter from the Department Chair that documents the candidate's standing in his/her field.

(2) A one page personal statement by the candidate of his/her recent accomplishments and current research agenda.

(2) From the NIH Guide: NINDS POLICY UPDATE FOR CAREER (K) AWARDS  (NOT-NS-02-008)

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) announces a change in the allowable salary and research costs for its career award mechanisms.  The mechanisms affected are the following (see:  http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/research_training.htm).

o Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01)

o Independent Scientist Award (K02)

o Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08)

o NINDS Career Transition Award (K22)

o Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23)

Effective with career awards funded in FY 2002, all competing (Types 1) applications are eligible to request the following higher salary and research costs:

o Maximum allowable salary is $85,000.

o Maximum allowable research costs for K01 awards is $35,000.

o Maximum allowable research costs for K02, K08 and K23 awards is $50,000.

o Maximum allowable total direct costs for the extramural phase of the K22 awards is $150,000; therefore, applicants may request any combination of salary

(up to $85,000) and research costs up to the maximum allowable direct costs.

This policy also applies to all non-competing (Type 5) K02 awards.  However, the non-competing (Type 5) K01, K08, and K23 awards will continue to receive salary and research support under the original terms and conditions of the award.
