Digest: DSR to Provide
Proposal Processing Services at HSC for February 1 NIH Deadline
The Division of Sponsored Research will again offer on-site proposal processing
services in the Health Science Center for the upcoming February 1 NIH deadline.
Proposal Processing staff will be available as follows:
** Tuesday, January 29 - 1:00-4:30 p.m. - Hugh M. Hill
Conference Room (R1-106)
** Wednesday, January 30 - 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon - Conference Room M112;
& 1:00-4:30 p.m. - Conference Room M112.
Complete proposal review service will be provided, including the authorized
institutional signature. Proposals will be released back to the Principal
Investigator or his/her representative for mailing. Please bring the original
proposal plus one (1) complete copy for the DSR records. Without this record
copy, the authorized signature may not be provided on site.
Questions may be directed to the Proposal Processing Office at 392-9267. The
Proposal Processing Office, 2nd Floor, Grinter Hall, will be staffed and open
for business as usual -- 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday – on these
days.

Digest: A Reminder to Use NIH Revised Forms and Guidelines
With the New Year comes a reminder from Research & Graduate Programs to use
the revised forms recently issued by both the National Science Foundation
(NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH):
* NIH 398 and 2590 Forms: Applications submitted to the NIH on or
after January 10, 2002, must use the new PHS 398 and 2590 (rev. 5/01) forms.
After this date, applications using the previous version (rev. 4/98) will be
returned to the applicant.
The 398 and 2590 forms are available at the following NIH link: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm
In addition, NIH will continue to provide the pre-printed PHS 2590 Face Page
for awards with start dates through September 2002. After September 2002, as
apart of NIH's transition to electronic forms and submission, the NIH will
discontinue mailing the pre-printed PHS 2590 Face Page. Notification of a
Progress Report due date will become electronic.

4) COS Quick Form for PHS 398 Biosketch Upgrade
The COS
quick for PHS398 Biosketch has been updated to reflect the recent changes
in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PHS 398 biographical sketch form
(Rev. 5/01). COS Quick form for
Biosketch allows universities and researchers to quickly create a PHS 398
Biographical Sketch form by merging the information form an individual’s COS
Expertise profile into the Biosketch template. If you have any questions regarding COS Quick Form or the

SALARY LIMITATION ON GRANTS, COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS AND CONTRACTS NOT-OD-02-030
The purpose of this notice is to provide updated information regarding the salary limitation as it relates to NIH grant and cooperative agreement awards. This information also applies to extramural research and development contract awards.
FY 2002 Awards (Executive Level I)

For proposals not already submitted to ORA for review the new NIH salary cap should be taken in consideration when configuring proposal budgets.

NATIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE AWARD (NRSA) STIPEND INCREASE AND OTHER
BUDGETARYCHANGES EFFECTIVE FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002 NOT-OD-02-028
STIPENDS: Effective with all NRSA awards made on or after October 1, 2001, the following annual stipend levels apply to all individuals receiving support through institutional research training grants or individual fellowships, including the Minority Access to Research Career (MARC) and Career Opportunities in research (COR) programs. These awards are made under the authority of Section 487 of the Public Health Service Act.

7) From the NIH Guide: NIH EXTRAMURAL LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM REGARDING CLINICAL RESEARCHERS - NOT-OD-02-024
The National Institutes
of Health (NIH) announces the availability of educational loan repayment under
the NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program for Clinical Researchers
(LRP-CR). The LRP-CR provides for
the repayment of the educational loan debt of qualified health professionals
who agree to conduct clinical research.
The program provides for the repayment of up to $35,000 of the principal
and interest of the educational loans of extramural grantees or awardees for
each year of obligated service.
Also, NIH covers the Federal taxes on the loan repayments, which are
considered taxable income to program participants.
Applicants with a pending
NIH grant application may be considered if the application will be acted upon
no later than the May 2002 or June 2002 meeting of the Institute or Center
National Advisory Council. The grant must be funded before the end of the
fiscal year (September 30, 2002).

8) From the NIH Guide: NIH EXTRAMURAL LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM FOR PEDIATRIC RESEARCHERS - NOT-OD-02-025
The National Institutes
of Health (NIH) announces the availability of educational loan repayment under
the NIH Extramural Pediatric Research Loan Repayment Program (PR-LRP). The PR-LRP provides for the repayment
of the educational loan debt of qualified health professionals who agree to
conduct pediatric research. The
Program provides for the repayment of up to $35,000 of the principal and

Program is the recruitment and retention of highly qualified health

9) American Cancer
Society:
Beginning on July 1, 2002, all American Cancer Society research scholar
grants and clinical research training grants will pay associated indirect costs
at the rate of 20% (this is a decrease).
This includes all applications currently under review. Grants funded
before July 1, 2002, are not affected by this policy change.
10) Medical Student Research Day is planned for Tuesday, March 12, 2002. This is a chance for all medical students who have performed a research project to attend and present their data, either as a 10-minute oral communication or as a poster presentation (5-minute oral presentation to judges). Seniors who hope to graduate with honors for distinguished research are encouraged to participate.
Students who decide to participate will be competing for one of three awards, as follows: Two awards will be from the Watson Clinic. These are the Albert G. King Award for Distinguished Research (other than cancer research), and the John Harrington Tanous Award for Distinguished Research in Cancer. Each of these awards consists of a $1,000 prize, a certificate, and the awardees names will be engraved on a plaque that is on permanent display at the Watson Clinic and in the College of Medicine. The third award is the Alpha Omega Alpha Research Award sponsored by AOA. This consists of a plaque and monetary award of $250.
Please note that M.D./Ph.D. students are welcome to participate in Medical Student Research Day. However, they will not be eligible for the above three awards unless the research presented in unrelated to their Ph.D. dissertation research.

Please include a short abstract of your work (no more than 400 words, submitted on a diskette using Microsoft Word). 11) Howard Hughes Biomedical Research Support Program -Pilot Project
Awards:
The University of Florida has received a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). This grant, titled Biomedical Research Support Program for Medical Schools, includes funding for pilot research projects. Applications for these awards will be limited to tenure track assistant professors recruited in the last three years. Approximately five pilot projects, with maximum budgets of $30,000, will be awarded, with the goal of helping junior investigators to compete for extramural grants. Applications will be reviewed by a Research Committee, which will make recommendations to the Program Director. Projects will be judged on creativity, feasibility and potential for future funding.

12) 2002 Faculty
Research Awards: Each year the College of Medicine Faculty Council presents
awards to two faculty members for outstanding achievement, productivity, and
research discovery. Awards are
given in two categories: Basic Science Research and Clinical Science Research.
The CLINICAL RESEARCH AWARD will be given for research having a close connection with clinical medicine and/or having a significant impact on the delivery of patient care. The BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH AWARD will be given for research contributing to our understanding of the fundamental underlying principals of biology and medicine.
Under the rules governing the
Faculty Research Awards, and faculty member can nominate another faculty member
for one of the awards. Nominations
should be forwarded no later than 5:00 p.m. February 8, 2002 to the office for
Research Affairs (Sandra Smith, PO Box 100215; Rm. M-134; Fax# 392-7427; email snsmith@dean.med.ufl.edu). A complete nomination package should
include:
1. The letter of nomination;
2. The candidate’s CV;
3. The names and addresses of three potential supporters who are knowledgeable about the faculty member’s research and who are not on the faculty at the University of Florida. The faculty member making the nomination should not personally request the letters of reference, but merely submit the list of potential references to the Office for Research Affairs.

1) Invitrogen Corp is accepting applications for the “Research Tools Development Grants Program”. Preproposals for the first-quarter are due by March 1, 2002. Applicants who’s Preproposals are accepted will then be asked to submit a grant proposal. Grant Proposals will only be accepted through execution of a Confidential Disclosure Agreement. 2) Research!America request nominations for “The Eugene Garfield Economic Impact of Medical and Health Research Award”. The deadline for nominations (including self-nominiations) is January 31, 2002. 3) The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is accepting applications for the “Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research, 2002”. Individuals interested in applying for an Investigator award shoud submit an original Letter of Intent (LOI). Letters of Intent will be reviewed and a limited number of applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal. The deadline for LOI’s is April 5, 2002. 4) The American Society for Clinical Nutrition, Inc. is accepting applications for the “Physician-Nutrition Specialist Salary Support Award”. Applications are due by April 15, 2002. A letter from the Dean of the College of Medicine must accompany the application and must include a commitment of at least $10,000 per year in matching salary funds to maintain the program at the same or increased level of support for a minimum period that matches the duration of the award. 1). Announcing the 2002
RESEARCH ADMINISTRATORS TRAINING SERIES
The Division of Sponsored Research invites you to a Research Administrators'
Training Series. Each session will be held from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. We
ask that you bring a brown bag lunch with you to the session or for sessions
held in the Reitz Union lunch may be purchased from any of the vendors
there. The first session will be
on January 23, 2002 at the Reitz Union, Room 349 (3rd floor on pond side) and will cover the topic "The
Division of Sponsored Research - How We Work." This session will
include information on Proposal Processing and Award Administration.
