GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES IN RESEARCH
BY Teri Kordella
Diabetes
researchers and care providers came to San Francisco, the
City by the Bay, from all over the world to attend the American
Diabetes Association's 62nd Annual Scientific Sessions.
The
atmosphere around the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco
took on the aura of a modern-day Gold Rush as thousands of
scientists, doctors, diabetes educators, and researchers converged
in June to discover the latest news on diabetes treatment
and prevention.

A
NEW APPROACH TO MANAGING DIABETES
For people with diabetes, food choices play a significant
role in the success of blood sugar control. A study appearing
in the October 5, 2002 issue of the British Medical Journal
found that basic training in math and carbohydrate counting
can help people with type 1 diabetes follow more flexible
eating plans without losing control of their blood sugar levels
or quality of life. The training and follow-up program is
known as the Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE), which
was originally developed by clinicians in Germany.

DONT
FORGET
RADIOLOGY
PROFESSIONAL FEES FOR RESEARCH & CLINICAL TRIAL STUDIES

budget for clinical trials/research studies which involve
radiological services, please contact Brenda Wise in Radiology
at 265-0680 X44329 or email her at wisebc@radiology.ufl.edu
to obtain the correct price for each procedure. If you currently
have ongoing clinical trials/research studies involving these
services, please contact her in order for her to obtain information
regarding your study(ies) for billing purposes. This will
preclude your patients from receiving a bill for these services.
Please
note that Shands will charge the research study for the technical
fee component of the radiological procedure as well.

RUTH L. KIRSCHSTEIN NATIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE AWARD (NRSA)
STIPENDS AND UNALLOWABLE CHARGES
NRSA
recipients receive a stipend—a subsistence allowance
to help defray living expenses during the research training
experience. It is not provided as a condition of employment
with either the Federal Government or the institution. Since
NRSA awards are not provided as a condition of employment,
it is inappropriate and unallowable for institutions to seek
funds for or to charge individual fellowships and institutional
training grant awards for costs that would normally be associated
with employee benefits (for example FICA, workman's compensation
and unemployment insurance). NIH occasionally receives information
that FICA and/or other unallowable costs have been inappropriately
charged to NRSA stipends. This notice should serve as a reminder
that such charges are unallowable at all
times.
If
you have any questions in regards to the above notice or need
help in composing a National Research Service Award proposal,
please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Research Affairs
for assistance.

UF Internal Deadline Procedure
Certain
agencies announce Requests for Applications that limit the
number of proposals that can be submitted by the University.
In these instances, the Office for Research Affairs will post
an internal deadline for interested faculty to submit a Letter
of Intent to the Office for Research Affairs.
If
there are more applicants interested in submitting a proposal
than the agency's guidelines allow for, an internal review
process will be coordinated by ORA. ORA will only coordinate
the requests that are specifically for health related projects.
RGP will coordinate all other requests. There is not always
a candidate who applies for an award. If you are interested
in a funding opportunity and the internal deadline has passed,
check with ORA to see if this opportunity is still available.
